This recital of British and American song cycles and individual songs was delightfully presented by Paul and Carol Austin Kelly whose relaxed and engaging partnership quickly communicated itself to the large audience. Away from their more familiar operatic world they had prepared an interesting programme, showing Paul's mastery of the text with some very affecting piano singing as well as some fine full tone in the climactic moments. Britten's brilliant keyboard writing in his Winter Words gave Carol the chance to colour the text, producing a wide range of dynamics.
Both artists seemed equally at home with the Barber and Copland after the interval, giving a charming, characterful and idiomatic reading of the text. It was a pleasure for the listeners to share the obvious pleasure of the performers.
